Why Do I Still Look Pregnant Months After Birth?

Many women are surprised that their tummy still feels swollen, weak or “different” long after having a baby. You may notice doming through your abdomen, ongoing bloating, lower back pain, pelvic heaviness or difficulty returning to exercise.
This is incredibly common after pregnancy and birth, but it’s not always simply a matter of needing to “strengthen your core”.
Common reasons your tummy may still look or feel different postpartum can include:
• abdominal separation (diastasis recti)
• pelvic floor weakness or overactivity
• changes in breathing and pressure management• scar tissue after caesarean birth• reduced deep core muscle function
• hormonal and connective tissue changes
• posture and rib cage changes during pregnancy
For some women, a larger levator hiatus or pelvic organ prolapse can also contribute to feelings of heaviness or reduced support through the abdomen and pelvis.
The good news is that the right rehabilitation approach can make a significant difference. Pelvic health physiotherapy focuses on restoring strength, coordination and pressure management in a way that supports your body after pregnancy.
At Bump and Beyond Physio, we assess:
• abdominal muscle recovery
• pelvic floor function
• return to running or exercise readiness
• caesarean scar mobility
• prolapse symptoms
• breathing and movement patterns
Every recovery journey is different, and it’s never “too late” to seek support, even years after having children.
If you’re struggling with postpartum recovery, pelvic heaviness, abdominal weakness or returning to exercise, pelvic health physiotherapy may help.
